“O, beware, my lord, of jealousy!
It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on.”
OTHELLO the Moor, a military general employed by the Venetian state, loves DESDEMONA, a daughter of the senator Brabantio. Undeterred by the differences in their backgrounds and life experiences, Othello and Desdemona defy prejudice to be united in marriage.
But deadly malice lurks where the newlyweds least expect it, as the one man Othello trusts the most resolves to destroy their happiness at any cost. IAGO plants the suspicion in Othello’s mind that Desdemona has been unfaithful to him with Cassio. Iago engineers a drunken brawl for which Cassio is blamed. Desdemona intervenes on Cassio’s behalf but her pleas to Othello for his reinstatement simply convince Othello further that Cassio is her lover. Iago acquires a treasured handkerchief that belonged to Desdemona and uses it as ‘proof’ of the affair.
Whispers of suspicion feed irrational jealousy in this gripping psychological drama, one of Shakespeare’s greatest and best-known tragedies.

THE PLAN
You’re invited! All ages welcome. Free. We recast after every scene so all who want to get a chance to read. All casting is non-gender specific so women can read men’s roles and vice-versa. If you’d like to just listen that’s OK too. Please bring a copy of the play if possible. We MAY have a couple of extra copies. Your cell phones can also bring up the text. The benefit to you when you read Shakespeare out loud is that you sharpen your cold reading skills whether you’re an actor or someone who just enjoys speaking and hearing the wonderful poetry and graceful language. It doesn’t hurt your street cred either.
You will meet others who share your interest in Shakespeare and theater. We look forward to seeing you here!
