Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice: A Great Play Despite its Villain

May 21 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Free

Something is rotten in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, but it’s not Shakespeare’s fault. There’s a good reason for the bad example of inventing the Jew Shylock to be the play’s villain, and the play, though its semi-anti-Semitism is offensive and dangerous, is nonetheless of universal value.

Dr. Gideon Rappaport, San Diego’s premier Shakespearean dramaturg, will discuss this topic as part of the Mandelbaum Family Lecture Series.
