SUMMARY:Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice: A Great Play Despite its Villain
DESCRIPTION:Something is rotten in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice\, but it’s not Shakespeare’s fault. There’s a good reason for the bad example of inventing the Jew Shylock to be the play’s villain\, and the play\, though its semi-anti-Semitism is offensive and dangerous\, is nonetheless of universal value. \nDr. Gideon Rappaport\, San Diego’s premier Shakespearean dramaturg\, will discuss this topic as part of the Mandelbaum Family Lecture Series.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare's Rhetorical Figures
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Gideon Rappaport will discuss his book Shakespeare’s Rhetorical Figures: An Outline. When Shakespeare began writing for the stage\, he had already mastered over two hundred rhetorical figures inherited from the long tradition of the language arts–grammar\, logic\, and rhetoric–stretching from Aristotle to his own time. These figures\, which to us may appear merely decorative\, were for Shakespeare the very medium of speech\, and as his art developed\, his figures became more and more subtly expressive of meaning.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare's Peers
DESCRIPTION:The man with the funny haircut seems to take up most of the oxygen in the Elizabethan room\, but what about other playwrights of the period? What about Thomas Kyd and his Spanish Tragedy? What about Kit Marlowe and his Tamburlaine? Or Ben Jonson\, Will’s supposed pal? And the others? Kim Keeline will provide a survey of these contemporaries and consider any of their influence on the familiar canon. \nKim Keeline has a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Southern California. She has taught multiple courses at USC\, as well as at Southwestern College\, MiraCosta College\, and Central Texas College. She has been a frequent speaker at academic conferences and has received several prestigious awards for her work.

SUMMARY:The Kingdom of Denmark against Hamlet: A Shakespeare Mock Trial and Talkback
DESCRIPTION:Our premise is that after King Claudius orders Hamlet sent to England for his killing of Polonius\, a great storm at sea arises that prevents Hamlet and his escorts Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern from taking ship. In the meantime\, Laertes returns from France\, learns of his father’s death\, and raises a rebellion against Claudius. Always the consummate politician\, Claudius orders Hamlet seized and put on trial\, hoping to assuage Laertes. \nThe audience will serve as the jury and deliver its verdict by voice vote at the conclusion of the trial. We will also hold a talkback session with the cast and audience.

SUMMARY:Stage Combat
DESCRIPTION:Did you ever wonder how those elaborate broils in Shakespeare are managed? How does Prince Hal keep from really sticking Hotspur? This will be a lecture and demonstration in the specialized theatre technique of creating the illusion of physical combat without causing harm to the actors. Such fight choreography is critical to effectively staging many of Shakespeare’s plays with authenticity. Our guide will be Genevieve Foster\, Quartermaster and Instructor for UC Berkeley’s Historical Fencing Club studying Medieval and Renaissance combat.
