SUMMARY:Now Thrive the Armorers
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Farrell\, program director of Chivalry Today and head instructor with the San Diego Longsword medieval fencing program\, for a look into the language\, function\, and artistry of knightly armor in Shakespeare’s world. From the glory of Henry V\, to the supernatural apparitions of Hamlet\, to the treachery of Macbeth\, arms and armor appear over and over in Shakespeare’s works\, and a thorough understanding of the “visual language” of medieval and Renaissance armor lends a much deeper\, more nuanced understanding of many of his stories and characters.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare Character Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The San Diego Shakespeare Society is offering a unique opportunity for the dedicated student of the Bard to dig most deeply into the humanity of the plays. Rather than be satisfied with rote recitation of text\, this guided workshop will enable its participants to explore the characters intimately and to determine to what extent they may identify with them. \nWhich Shakespeare character are you? \nThe play Hamlet takes place in Denmark with a specific group of Danes\, but the drama of Hamlet is not bounded by time or place—it is universal. There are Hamlets from Shanghai to San Diego. The characters of the canon live in us\, and each person realizes these characters in unique and wonderful ways. This workshop will be a chance to share how you have identified with Shakespeare’s characters. \nBeforehand\, participants will be asked to think back over their lives as to which Shakespeare characters they have strongly empathized with and the reasons therefor. Do certain lines spin in your mind over and over again? Are there passages from Shakespeare you keep returning to? Try to write at least a paragraph about this and bring your “homework” to the workshop. Please copy and paste any memorable Shakespeare passages to your sheet and bring it to the gathering. \nHow it will work: \nWe will start with a “speed dating” event: Each person\, with their writing in hand\, has a few minutes to talk to the person in the opposite row\, and then they switch to the next person. At the end\, we can leave time for those who feel up to it to read off their personal observations or recite their favored passages for the entire group. \nAnd did we mention that it’s FREE!

SUMMARY:Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice: A Great Play Despite its Villain
DESCRIPTION:Something is rotten in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice\, but it’s not Shakespeare’s fault. There’s a good reason for the bad example of inventing the Jew Shylock to be the play’s villain\, and the play\, though its semi-anti-Semitism is offensive and dangerous\, is nonetheless of universal value. \nDr. Gideon Rappaport\, San Diego’s premier Shakespearean dramaturg\, will discuss this topic as part of the Mandelbaum Family Lecture Series.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare's Rhetorical Figures
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Gideon Rappaport will discuss his book Shakespeare’s Rhetorical Figures: An Outline. When Shakespeare began writing for the stage\, he had already mastered over two hundred rhetorical figures inherited from the long tradition of the language arts–grammar\, logic\, and rhetoric–stretching from Aristotle to his own time. These figures\, which to us may appear merely decorative\, were for Shakespeare the very medium of speech\, and as his art developed\, his figures became more and more subtly expressive of meaning.
