The TIME of the event has been updated!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTL;DR: Tamora plans false incrimination\, rape\, murder\, and mutilation. Titus plans murder and cannibalism. This is not a happy play. \n—- \nA bit more about the play: The Roman general Titus Andronicus returns from war with four prisoners who vow to take revenge against him. They rape and mutilate Titus’ daughter and have his sons killed and banished. Titus kills two of them and cooks them into a pie\, which he serves to their mother before killing her too. The Roman emperor kills Titus\, and Titus’ last remaining son kills the emperor and takes his place. \nThere will be a ZOOM link to join the reading\, available on the Online Event page or in your “My Tickets” section. \n\n\nThis reading will be led by Bill Glaser\, who discovered Shakespeare at the age of twenty and has been a bardolater for more than sixty years. He taught Shakespeare at both the junior and senior high school levels for six years\, after which he continued teaching small groups and individuals informally. He played both Polonius and the ghost in the one-hour\, comic version of Hamlet in San Diego’s Balboa Park\, and more recently he played the duke in The Show Must Go Online production of The Comedy of Errors. \n—- \nFAQ \nQ: Do I have to read? \nA: You are welcome to show up and just watch. We suspect\, however\, that it will look like too much fun for you to resist for long. A lot of newcomers don’t want to read initially but when they see how fun it is\, they join in! But there is no pressure at all if you just want to watch and we have regular attendees who have never read. \nQ: Can I act as a specific character or be in a particular scene? \nA: That may be possible. Each evening has an assigned director who has planned what scenes to cover. If you are really anxious to act in a specific scene\, talk to the director at the start and see what can be arranged. No guarantees\, but if the scene is being done that night\, it might be possible. All scenes are cast that night right before they are read\, so usually\, everyone who wants to act has the chance to do at least a small role. \nQ: Who can participate? \nA: Everyone! Marcy Sculpture Garden. \nFree after Museum admission. Check in at the Museum front desk to reserve your spot. To stop Caesar from gaining too much power\, Brutus and the conspirators kill him on the Ides of March. Mark Antony drives the conspirators out of Rome and fights them in a battle. Shakespeare exited the earthly stage more than 400 years ago\, but Dr. Lederer will demonstrate that the Bard is alive and well and living robustly in San Diego. This event is presented in partnership with the San Diego Shakespeare Society. \nThe recording of this event will be available for on demand viewing on the Library’s Facebook and YouTube pages following the events conclusion. \n\n\n\nRichard Lederer is the author of more than 50 books about language\, history\, and humor\, including his best-selling Anguished English series and his current books\, A Treasury of Halloween Humor and A Treasury of Christmas Humor. Dr. Lederer’s syndicated column\, “Lederer on Language\,” appears in newspapers and magazines throughout the United States\, including the San Diego Union-Tribune\, and he is a founding co-host of “A Way With Words” on KPBS Public Radio.

Prospero’s slave\, Caliban\, plots to rid himself of his master\, but is thwarted by Prospero’s spirit-servant Ariel. The King’s young son Ferdinand\, thought to be dead\, falls in love with Prospero’s daughter Miranda. Their celebrations are cut short when Prospero confronts his brother and reveals his identity as the usurped Duke of Milan. The families are reunited and all conflict is resolved. He will work with actors on their Shakespearean sonnet or monologue concentrating on correct pronunciations\, interpretation\, speaking in iambic pentameter\, proper syllable stress\, and making your Shakespeare performance understandable\, accessible\, and dramatically exciting to an audience! \nExcellent preparation for presenting your Shakespeare piece at any audition. \n  \n15 Students will be guaranteed 10 minutes of Gideon’s attention and feedback. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free Zoom lecture with Professor Alicia Andrzejewski!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nAfter registering\, check the “My Tickets” section in your account to locate the Zoom link. All who register will also receive a REPLAY. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Andrzejewski will bring together queer and feminist theory; performance studies; and archival research to address a conspicuous absence in queer readings of Shakespeare’s work: the pregnant body. \nWhile early modern scholars tend to read representations of pregnancy as commensurate with heterosexual sex\, desire\, and partnership\, Alicia focuses on one of Shakespeare’s early plays\, Titus Andronicus\, to argue that representations of pregnancy in Shakespeare’s canon still resist heteronormative structures that dictate what pregnancy should look like or how a pregnant person should act. \nTamora’s pregnant body is a “rude-growing briar\,” whispered about in the margins of the play before producing a child that directly challenges the “white-limed walls” of Rome. In short\, Shakespeare’s representations of quivering\, quickening\, and mixed-race children in Titus Andronicus continue to resist our own deep-seated ideologies about reproduction and\, consequently\, how we understand pregnancy\, gender\, conflict\, and definitions of life. \n— \nAlicia Andrzejewski is an Assistant Professor in William & Mary’s English department. She is a scholar of early modern literature and culture; queer\, feminist\, and critical race theory; and the medical humanities. Her work has appeared in Shakespeare Studies\, Shakespeare Bulletin\, and the online publication Synapsis. Her current book project\, Rude-Growing Briars: Queer Pregnancy in Shakespeare’s Plays\, argues for the transgressive force of pregnancy in his oeuvre and the expansive ways in which early modern people thought about the pregnant body. \n— \nThe public replay will be for a limited time. DESCRIPTION:Work your Shakespeare monologue with a celebrated director!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nExcellent preparation for presenting your Shakespeare piece at any audition. \n15 Students will be guaranteed 10 minutes of Delicia’s attention and feedback. Your monologue should be no longer than 2 minutes. \nWhile we can only work with a small group of actors\, we are also happy to offer up AUDIENCE seating—hear the same lessons and see the results for yourself! \n\n\nYour Instructor\nDelicia Turner Sonnenberg is a founder and the former Artistic Director of MOXIE Theatre\, which she helmed for 12 acclaimed seasons receiving The Des McAnuff New Visions Award for “Risk Taking Leadership and Body of Work” and “2015 Director of the Year” from the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle. \nShe has also directed plays for Actors Theatre of Louisville Humana Festival\, San Diego REP\, The Old Globe Theatre\, La Jolla Playhouse\, Cygnet Theatre\, New Village Arts\, Diversionary Theatre\, and Mo’olelo Performing Arts Company. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun night of reading the play!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nYou will be sent a ZOOM link to join the reading. \nThis reading will be led by Jeffrey Swain. Jeffrey became active with the San Diego Shakespeare Society about 2010 when he appeared as The Sexton in an SDSS staged reading of “Much Ado About Nothing” under the direction of Jack Winans. He later appeared as the Ship’s Master in another SDSS staged reading of The Tempest. He has appeared twice in the North County Celebrity Sonnets\, assisted as emcee during the Student Shakespeare Festival\, and assisted with Celebrity Sonnets at the Old Globe. \n  \nFAQ \nQ: Do I have to read? \nA: You are welcome to show up and just watch. We suspect\, however\, that it will look like too much fun for you to resist for long. A lot of newcomers don’t want to read initially but when they see how fun it is\, they join in! SUMMARY:The Shakespearean Sonnet as Dramatic Dialogue – Virtual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free Zoom lecture with Professor Paul Majkut!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nYou will be sent a Zoom link to join the talk on October 18th. \nIn this discussion\, Paul will present a short restructuring of the sonnets to give voice for two characters: the Old Shakespeare and the Dark Lady. This follows the “May and December” tradition in literature—an old man pursuing a young woman. \nFrom Paul: \n“Among its many genres\, verse poetry had long been written as dramatic monologue as well as epic narrative\, lyrical self-expression\, philosophical inquiry\, and so on. While Elizabethan and Jacobean drama employed various verse structures (blank verse\, rhymed couplets\, and other verse techniques such as alliteration and assonance)\, the sonnet sequence\, so enormously popular during Shakespeare’s life\, is also ideally suited to restructuring as dramatic dialogue.” \n  \nThank you to the City of Coronado Public Library for hosting this event! \n  \nPaul Majkut has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Shakespeare\, Elizabethan-Jacobean drama\, and the poetry of the English renaissance and 17th century in his career as a university teacher. He has been awarded two National Endowment for the Humanities grants (Cambridge\, 2003\, Oxford\, 2010)\, and has served as a Fulbright Scholar (Argentina) and Fulbright Senior Specialist (Finland\, Germany\, Mexico). In March\, he has again been awarded a Fulbright Senior Specialist grant to advise and lecture at the University of Tallinn\, Estonia. For over a decade\, he was the drama and film critic for The San Diego Review\, winning numerous press awards\, including reviews of Old Globe productions of Romeo and Juliet\, Othello\, and As You Like It\, as well as films (Richard III\, Twelfth Night\, A Midsummer Night’s Dream).
