All who register will also receive a REPLAY. \nDr. Joubin is the author of the recently published book Shakespeare in East Asia (Oxford University Press\, 2021)\, which raises such intriguing questions as: How did Kurosawa influence George Lucas’ Star Wars? Why do critics repeatedly use the adjective Shakespearean to describe Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019)? How do East Asian cinema and theatre portray vocal disability and transgender figures? \nDr. Joubin will illustrate through entertaining examples how Shakespeare is connected to theatre\, film\, and literature in East Asia. Her book identifies four themes: Japanese formalistic innovations in sound and spectacle; reparative adaptations from China\, Taiwan\, and Hong Kong; the politics of gender and reception of films and touring productions in South Korea and the UK; and multilingual works in Singapore and the UK. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing a Capulet party. A young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet\, who is due to marry her father’s choice\, the County Paris. With the help of Juliet’s nurse\, the women arrange for the couple to marry the next day\, but Romeo’s attempt to halt a street fight leads to the death of Juliet’s own cousin\, Tybalt\, for which Romeo is banished. In a desperate attempt to be reunited with Romeo\, Juliet follows the Friar’s plot and fakes her own death. The message fails to reach Romeo\, and believing Juliet dead\, he takes his life in her tomb. Juliet wakes to find Romeo’s corpse beside her and kills herself. York secretly leads a rebellion\, his supporters proclaim him king\, and Henry is forced to flee. \nDirector: Shakespeare Authority Kim Keeline will guide the reading. She has been an instructor in composition and literature\, USC\, Washington State\, PACE program\, Mira Costa College\, and Southwestern College. Kim received the Star Award from the San Diego Performing Arts League in 2012 for her work at the SDSS. Staged in the unique environs of the Globe’s large\, open\, and raw rehearsal studios\, this modern production directed by M.F.A. program director Jesse Perez brings Hal\, Hotspur\, Quickly\, and\, yes\, Falstaff into the 21st century. A small company of 12 M.F.A. actors conjures an intimate experience that transports you from the tavern to the battlefield\, with laughter\, poetry\, and drama throughout. \nA joint venture of the Globe and USD\, the Shiley Graduate Theatre Program nationally recruits seven students each year to participate in an intensive two-year course of graduate study in classical theatre. Private funding for the Master of Fine Arts in Theatre program has been contributed through a generous endowment established by Donald and Darlene Shiley. Wildenthal (Judge Pompius Rabius)\, and Bill Glaser (Dr. Themison of Laodicea)\nAfter a hiatus of two years\, the Society is proud to announce the resumption of the Mock Trial project. On Sunday\, November 7th at 2:00 p.m.\, at the Coronado Library\, The Court-Martial of Brutus will take place. Our premise is that Brutus is captured alive at the Battle of Philippi and put on trial by a military commission for his role in the assassination of Julius Caesar. Brutus pleads not guilty by reason of temporary insanity due to psychological manipulation by Cassius and the prevailing mass hysteria of the time. Cast and participants:\n\n\n\nJudge: Bryan H. Wildenthal\nClerk: Amanda Walter\nProsecutor: Samuel W. Shenanigans ensue. \n—- \nA bit more about the play: Viola\, separated from her twin Sebastian\, dresses as a boy and works for the Duke Orsino\, whom she falls in love with. Orsino is in love with the Countess Olivia\, and sends Viola to court her for him\, but Olivia falls for Viola instead. Sebastian arrives\, causing a flood of mistaken identity\, and marries Olivia. Viola then reveals she is a girl and marries Orsino. \nPatrick McBride has directed\, acted and taught for over 25 years. He is a Teaching Artist with Young Audiences of San Diego\, Playwrights Project\, and CoTA. He has a B.F.A in Directing from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. This is a fantasy romance as only old school Hollywood magic can create. \n \nBeth Accomando covers arts and culture around San Diego for KPBS News. She has been a film critic for more than 25 years and began at KPBS in 1987. Since 1997 she has been covering independent and international cinema as well as pop culture for National Public Radio and Public Radio International’s The World. She has received numerous Society of Professional Journalist Awards and San Diego Press Club Awards for her radio and web site work at KPBS. She has also received 11 southwestern area Emmy Awards in the categories of producing\, writing\, and sound design for promotional spots as well as national Pro Max and Telly Awards while working at Fox. His work has been recognized with both The Stella Gray Teaching Excellence Award and The Community-Engaged Learning and Research Award (UW-Parkside)\, and The Sister Joel Read Civic Engagement Practitioners Award (Wisconsin Campus Compact). Jonathan’s published research includes multiple articles\, book chapters\, and two books: Empowerment in Dispute Mediation: A Critical Analysis of Communication (1993)\, and Performing New Lives: Prison Theatre (2010). If you are a student and wish to PARTICIPATE in the festival\, please click here for more information. \nThe San Diego Student Shakespeare Festival is produced by the San Diego Shakespeare Society in association with Write Out Loud. \nParticipants prepare monologues\, sonnets\, two-person scenes\, or puppet scenes. Videos submitted will be edited together into a Full Festival Video\, to be live-streamed at 11:00 AM on Saturday\, April 24\, 2021.
