As Edelstein and three skilled actors demonstrate live onstage the methods he imparts to professional actors in the rehearsal room\, this entertaining behind-the-scenes look at the creative process offers a primer on the tools used to hear and understand Shakespeare.

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we dive into both sides of this fierce debate\, including an appearance by Cheryl Eagan-Donovan\, acclaimed documentary filmmaker.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin us IN-PERSON at the Coronado Public Library or via ZOOM\nRSVP on Eventbrite to receive the zoom link. \n \nFor hundreds of years\, doubts have been raised as to whether William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon\, a man of limited education and experience\, actually wrote the plays poems\, and sonnets credited to him. Walt Whitman\, Mark Twain\, Sigmund Freud\, Henry James\, Orson Welles\, and Malcom X\, to name a few\, have expressed such doubts. \nAt the forum\, we will introduce the question for the general audience by showing 20 minutes of a documentary\, “Last Will. & Testament\,” which provides viewpoints of both so-called “Orthodox” scholars and doubters. An informal discussion will follow\, moderated by Gordon Gidlund\, past President of the Society\, with the intent of more fully airing the controversy. He’s the kind of person who might be surprised by the depths of his own anger\, and equally by his chance at redemption.\nTouchstone – 30s – 60s. Nimble with language\, and a quick wit. A very capable court fool\, they also guard their true self jealously. Touchstone is a true convert to country living\, provided it’s a life of leisure. Freedom from the strictures of the court provide boundless room for their ample mind. Uses foolery as a means of truth telling.\n\nMusical ability a plus.\n\n\nDuke Frederick/Duke Senior – Late 40s – 50s. Frederick is volatile\, paranoid\, with a deep streak of cruelty. He is easily led\, while also being fiercely mistrustful. Arguably the most overtly villainous person in the play\, it stems from fighting so hard to get power\, and fear of losing it.\n\nSenior\, by contrast\, is thoughtful\, confident\, and generous. He’s not quick to temper\, and considers the needs of those around him\, weighing their nature before leveling his reaction. Probably good in a scrap\, but he’s more likely to reason with an opponent than hit them.\nMusical ability a plus.\n\n\n​Phoebe – 20s – early 30s. Intelligent by nature rather than by education\, with more than a hint of vanity. She’s ambitious\, independent\, and is thoroughly fed up with the kind of country riff raffs who have courted her her entire life. For someone who says ‘no’ a lot\, she reacts very poorly to being told ‘no’ herself.\n\nLikely doubles with Le Beau\, a courtier under Duke Frederick. They are gossipy\, observant\, and adept at following the whims of those in authority. A social climber of the first order.\nMusical ability a big plus.\n\n\nAudrey – 20s – early 30s. One of the truly simple of this world. Trusting\, unambitious without being lazy\, and content with where her life has landed her. When Touchstone comes into her life\, it’s like the world has cracked open\, offering her the kind of humor\, excitement\, and attention she never knew existed.\n\nLikely doubles with some hangers-on at the court.\nMusical ability a big plus.\n\n\nSilvius – 20s – 30s. Persistent\, loyal\, and kind. The sort of person who loves deeply and trusts readily. An optimist to the marrow of his bones\, he’s certain that Phoebe will love him if she would only give him a chance.\n\nMusical ability a big plus.\nPossibly doubles with Charles the Wrestler.\n\n\nCharles the Wrestler – 20s – 40s. The kind of guy who thrives under Duke Frederick. Danger is inherently part of his nature\, but he’s got the kind of honor that comes to those who live by their hands. An exceptional fighter\, he’s not above killing his opponents when necessary. That kind of ruthless outlook is what made him – and keeps him – a champion.\nAmiens – Any age. A musician to the core. Someone for whom the lyrics of a song are where they feel most at home. Abandoned the court with Duke Senior because a world run by Frederick is too hard. Watchful\, keen\, and a good keeper of secrets. There may be something almost otherworldly about them. They are also the leader of whatever musical group we can cobble together for this world. Skill with instruments is necessary\, and they will also be creating songs based on the lyrics in the play.\nAdam – An old timer. Worked on the de Boys land their entire life\, and almost inordinately fond of Orlando. Loyal\, determined\, stubborn\, and irascible. They describe themselves as “strong and lusty\,” but that’s likely wishful thinking.\n\nThe role will double in some capacity.\nMusical ability a plus.\n\n\nWilliam – 20s – early 30s. The moniker of “Sweet William” seems adept. Not terribly bright\, but as nice a guy as you could hope to meet. He’s been courting Audrey for a good while\, but can’t hope to compete with a mind like Touchstone. Not for lack of trying\, however.\n\nThe role will double in some capacity.\nMusical ability a plus.

The four men fall in love and decide to court the women. A lot of newcomers don’t want to read initially but when they see how fun it is\, they join in! But there is no pressure at all if you just want to watch and we have regular attendees who have never read. \nQ: Can I act as a specific character or be in a particular scene? \nA: That may be possible. Each evening has an assigned director who has planned what scenes to cover. If you are really anxious to act in a specific scene\, talk to the director at the start and see what can be arranged. No guarantees\, but if the scene is being done that night\, it might be possible. All scenes are cast that night right before they are read\, so usually\, everyone who wants to act has the chance to do at least a small role. \nQ: Who can participate? \nA: Everyone! They are free and open to the public.

Angelo offers to pardon Claudio if his sister\, Isabella\, sleeps with him. Isabella agrees but has Angelo’s fiancé switch places with her. In 2008\, she received her Ph.D. in Theatre from UC San Diego\, where she taught theatre history\, theory\, performance\, film\, and writing courses and won an Excellence in Teaching Award for her outstanding work. Additionally\, she has published in the theatre field and has presented at conferences both in the US and Ireland. Heather has worked with multiple theatre organizations throughout her career as a National Director\, Director\, Dramaturg\, Education Director\, Teacher\, and more. Her directing experience includes The Laramie Project\, Matilda\, Tuck Everlasting\, All My Sons\, Freedom of the City\, The Addams Family\, A Piece of My Heart and many more. She also works in the Education Department for Broadway Licensing\, writing curriculum and educational materials for licensed musicals and plays. \n\n\nFAQ \nQ: Do I have to read? \nA: You are welcome to show up and just watch.
