SUMMARY:Shylock versus Portia - A Shakespeare Mock Trial
DESCRIPTION:RSVP on Eventbrite \nJoin lawyers and actors as Shylock takes Portia to court. This is a FREE event. \nAfter the events of the play\, Shylock discovers that Doctor of Laws “Balthazar” was really Portia in disguise\, so neither a man nor a lawyer. In a civil lawsuit\, he sues her for tortious interference with the contract. The Duke of Venice\, regretting the outcome of the earlier case as it damaged the city’s reputation for fairness (and thus its commercial prospects)\, allows Shylock’s lawsuit against Portia to proceed. \nThe members of the audience will serve as the jury and deliver a verdict by voice vote. \nThis production is dedicated to the memory of Amanda Walter\, past President of the Society.

SUMMARY:The Role of English-Russian Relations in Love's Labour's Lost
DESCRIPTION:RSVP on Eventbrite: https://bit.ly/3DFts7L \nShakespeare’s play\, Love’s Labour’s Lost has perplexed scholars and theatergoers for more than 400 years because of its linguistic complexity\, obscure topical allusions\, and non-comedic ending. Traditionally it has been seen as Shakespeare’s “French” play\, based on events and characters from the French Wars of Religion. \nIn her book Shakespeare\, Elizabeth and Ivan: The Role of English-Russian Relations in ‘Love’s Labours Lost’\, Dr. Rima Greenhill outlines an interpretation of the play which\, she believes\, is rooted in diplomatic and trade relations between Russia and Elizabethan England during the decades following England’s discovery of a northern trade route to Muscovy in 1553. She draws on original research of 16th century sources in English\, Latin\, French and Italian\, and surveys Russian sources previously unavailable in translation. \nDr. Greenhill will provide the context for the Russian-English exchange\, describe some of the Russian elements in the play\, talk about the significance of its secondary characters\, and explain its most enigmatic elements and linguistic anomalies\, as well as its two plays-within-the play: the Masque of the Muscovites and the Pageant of the Nine Worthies. \nDr. Greenhill is a Senior Lecturer in Russian language in the department of Slavic languages and literatures at Stanford University. Prior to that she taught at the School of Slavonic and East European Languages\, London University where she also received her PhD in Russian language and literature.

SUMMARY:Coriolanus Reading (Part Two) - Central County
DESCRIPTION:RSVP for free on Eventbrite –  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/coriolanus-reading-part-two-central-county-tickets-491063292527 \nTL;DR (may contain spoilers): Coriolanus hates the people\, and they banish him from Rome. Coriolanus loves his mother\, and she stops him from attacking Rome. He dies. \nRoman general Coriolanus makes his name defeating an enemy army and defending Rome. The Senate nominates him as consul but he cannot win the people’s vote\, so he is banished from Rome and allies with his old enemy. He comes to attack Rome\, his mother persuades him not to\, and his new-found ally kills him for the betrayal. \nMark Petrich has 50 years of close association with the works of Shakespeare and is his first love. As an actor\, he appeared in numerous productions\, including: Hamlet\, MacBeth\, King Lear\, Romero and Juliet\, Richard III\, and The Tempest. He also directed MacBeth for Vanguard Theatre with Shakespeare Society founders Tom Haine and Alex Sandy. He was a member of Jonathan McMurtry’s Shakespeare Master Class which explored the canon for eight years. Mark studied at ACT in San Francisco with Dakin Matthews and with David McCellan at the Old Globe.
