SUMMARY:Hamlet\, (Part One) ONLINE Reading - North County
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun night of reading the play directed by Patrick McBride -part of our North County events!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThere will be a ZOOM link to join the reading\, available on the Online Event page or in your “My Tickets” section. Register on Eventbrite to access the link https://www.eventbrite.com/e/hamlet-part-one-online-reading-north-county-tickets-229668142597 \nTL;DR: (may contain spoilers): Hamlet sees his dead dad’s ghost\, pretends to go crazy with revenge\, actually goes crazy with revenge (debatable)\, and everyone dies. \n—- \nA bit more about the play: The ghost of the King of Denmark tells his son Hamlet to avenge his murder by killing the new king\, Hamlet’s uncle. Hamlet feigns madness\, contemplates life and death\, and seeks revenge. His uncle\, fearing for his life\, also devises plots to kill Hamlet. The play ends with a duel\, during which the King\, Queen\, Hamlet’s opponent and Hamlet himself are all killed. \n—- \nHilarious TL;DR [“too long\, didn’t read”] notes and summaries from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Photo Credits: The Old Globe \n\n\n\nPatrick McBride has worked as a professional actor at numerous Shakespeare festivals and theatres around the country\, the last two years touring with Intrepid in their Shakespeare education tour\, and playing the fool for the San Diego Shakespeare Society’s stage reading of King Lear. He has taught Shakespeare classes for kids and adults at the Old Globe\, the Shakespeare theater in Washington DC\, Intrepid\, and for Luminary Arts. \n  \n“My passion for Shakespeare focuses on how to play it and how to say it. When I direct one of his plays I assert that Shakespeare is directing from the grave\, we simply need to find and follow the clues in the text that enable us to unlock how to best bring it to life on the stage. I will therefore discuss the language\, the characters\, the plot\, the staging\, the spectacle and the theme of As You Like It as if those participating in the open reading were the cast of the play and we were attempting our first read through.” – Patrick McBride \n  \n\n\nFAQ \nQ: Do I have to read? \nA: You are welcome to show up and just watch. We suspect\, however\, that it will look like too much fun for you to resist for long. A lot of newcomers don’t want to read initially but when they see how fun it is\, they join in! But there is no pressure at all if you just want to watch and we have regular attendees who have never read. \nQ: Can I act as a specific character or be in a particular scene? \nA: That may be possible. Each evening has an assigned director who has planned what scenes to cover. If you are really anxious to act in a specific scene\, talk to the director at the start and see what can be arranged. No guarantees\, but if the scene is being done that night\, it might be possible. All scenes are cast that night right before they are read\, so usually\, everyone who wants to act has the chance to do at least a small role. \nQ: Who can participate? \nA: Everyone! They are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare Authorship Forum - IN-PERSON @ Coronado Library and via ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we dive into both sides of this fierce debate\, including an appearance by Cheryl Eagan-Donovan\, acclaimed documentary filmmaker.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin us IN-PERSON at the Coronado Public Library or via ZOOM\nRSVP on Eventbrite to receive the zoom link. \n \nFor hundreds of years\, doubts have been raised as to whether William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon\, a man of limited education and experience\, actually wrote the plays poems\, and sonnets credited to him. Walt Whitman\, Mark Twain\, Sigmund Freud\, Henry James\, Orson Welles\, and Malcom X\, to name a few\, have expressed such doubts. \nAt the forum\, we will introduce the question for the general audience by showing 20 minutes of a documentary\, “Last Will. & Testament\,” which provides viewpoints of both so-called “Orthodox” scholars and doubters. An informal discussion will follow\, moderated by Gordon Gidlund\, past President of the Society\, with the intent of more fully airing the controversy. Local notables representing both sides will contribute to the discussion. \nThe forum will also include a Zoom appearance by Cheryl Eagan-Donovan\, an acclaimed documentary filmmaker\, who will argue in favor of a leading author candidate\, Edward de Vere\, Earl of Oxford\, a highly educated nobleman in the court of Queen Elizabeth\, who traveled extensively in Italy where so many of the plays take place. \nCoronado Public Library: 640 Orange Ave\, Coronado\, CA 92118 \nZoom: a link will be available on the “Online Event” page for those who register for that ticket type

SUMMARY:Love’s Labors Lost\, (Part Two) ONLINE Reading - North County
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun night of reading the play directed by Martie Clark -part of our North County events!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThere will be a ZOOM link to join the reading\, available on the Online Event page or in your “My Tickets” section. Register on Eventbrite to access the link https://www.eventbrite.com/e/loves-labors-lost-part-two-online-reading-north-county-tickets-229667891847 \nTL;DR: (may contain spoilers): Four men forswear women right before four women arrive to meet them; the men change their minds. \n—- \nA bit more about the play: After vowing to avoid women\, the King and three of his friends have to host a princess and her three ladies. The four men fall in love and decide to court the women. In the end\, the women must return to their kingdom for a year after which they will marry the king and his friends\, providing they remain true to them. \n—- \nHilarious TL;DR [“too long\, didn’t read”] notes and summaries from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Photo Credits: The Old Globe \n\n\nFAQ \nQ: Do I have to read?

SUMMARY:Romeo and Juliet (Part Two) ONLINE Reading - North County series
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun night of reading the play with our leader Doug Smith – part of our North County-led events!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThere will be a ZOOM link to join the reading\, available on the Online Event page or in your “My Tickets” section. \n\nRegister on Eventbrite at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/189236681007  to receive the zoom link. \n\nTL;DR: The classic story of boy meets girl; girl’s family hates boy’s family; boy’s family hates girl’s family; boy kills girl’s cousin; boy and girl kill themselves. \n—- \nA bit more about the play: An age-old vendetta between two powerful families erupts into bloodshed. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing a Capulet party. A young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet\, who is due to marry her father’s choice\, the County Paris. With the help of Juliet’s nurse\, the women arrange for the couple to marry the next day\, but Romeo’s attempt to halt a street fight leads to the death of Juliet’s own cousin\, Tybalt\, for which Romeo is banished. In a desperate attempt to be reunited with Romeo\, Juliet follows the Friar’s plot and fakes her own death. The message fails to reach Romeo\, and believing Juliet dead\, he takes his life in her tomb. Juliet wakes to find Romeo’s corpse beside her and kills herself. The grieving family agree to end their feud. \n—- \nFAQ \nQ: Do I have to read? \nA: You are welcome to show up and just watch. SUMMARY:Titus Andronicus (Part Two) FREE Shakespeare Reading (online ONLY)
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nMore info/register link: Click me\n\n\n\nUPDATE 7/31: This event will ONLY be on Zoom\, in accordance with new San Diego County recommendations.\n\n\n\n\nTL;DR: Tamora plans false incrimination\, rape\, murder\, and mutilation. Titus plans murder and cannibalism. This is not a happy play. \n—- \nA bit more about the play: The Roman general Titus Andronicus returns from war with four prisoners who vow to take revenge against him. They rape and mutilate Titus’ daughter and have his sons killed and banished. Titus kills two of them and cooks them into a pie\, which he serves to their mother before killing her too. The Roman emperor kills Titus\, and Titus’ last remaining son kills the emperor and takes his place. \n\nThis is a hybird event with inperson/zoom.\n\nMeeting in person at the Coronado Public Library 640 Orange Ave\, Coronado\, CA 92118\nRegister at Eventbrite for zoom link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/titus-andronicus-part-two-free-and-online-shakespeare-reading-tickets-156436581025. There will be a ZOOM link to join the reading\, available on the Online Event page or in your “My Tickets” section.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis reading will be led by Bill Glaser\, who discovered Shakespeare at the age of twenty and has been a bardolater for more than sixty years. He taught Shakespeare at both the junior and senior high school levels for six years\, after which he continued teaching small groups and individuals informally. He played both Polonius and the ghost in the one-hour\, comic version of Hamlet in San Diego’s Balboa Park\, and more recently he played the duke in The Show Must Go Online production of The Comedy of Errors. \n—- \nFAQ \nQ: Do I have to read? \nA: You are welcome to show up and just watch. \n—- \nHilarious TL;DR [“too long\, didn’t read”] notes and summaries from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Photo Credits: Shakespeare’s globe
