SUMMARY:Shylock versus Portia - A Shakespeare Mock Trial
DESCRIPTION:RSVP on Eventbrite \nJoin lawyers and actors as Shylock takes Portia to court. This is a FREE event. \nAfter the events of the play\, Shylock discovers that Doctor of Laws “Balthazar” was really Portia in disguise\, so neither a man nor a lawyer. In a civil lawsuit\, he sues her for tortious interference with the contract. The Duke of Venice\, regretting the outcome of the earlier case as it damaged the city’s reputation for fairness (and thus its commercial prospects)\, allows Shylock’s lawsuit against Portia to proceed. \nThe members of the audience will serve as the jury and deliver a verdict by voice vote. \nThis production is dedicated to the memory of Amanda Walter\, past President of the Society.

SUMMARY:The Old Globe's Taming of the Shrew
DESCRIPTION:June 5 – July 10\, 2022 \nLowell Davies Festival Theatre \nBy William Shakespeare\nDirected by Shana Cooper \n“Come on\, and kiss me\, Kate.”\nNOTE: SDSS Members can login to our site to get the link for 35% off! \nIs anyone a match for the brash and strong-willed Katherine? The dashing adventurer Petruchio thinks he’s up to the challenge. Two of the sexiest figures in all of world theatre set off sparks in a clash of wills that is as bold as it is uproarious. Shakespeare’s masterful comedic take on the battle of the sexes turns everything we think about love\, marriage\, and gender on its head. Director Shana Cooper brings to the Globe her daring and contemporary staging\, which The New York Times praised as “an exhilarating new way to look at the comedy through modern eyes\,” and The Wall Street Journal’s theatre critic called “the best Shrew I’ve ever reviewed.”\n\nAn earlier version of this production of The Taming of the Shrew premiered at Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (Davis McCallum\, Artistic Director; Kate Liberman\, Managing Director) in June 2018.\n \nThe Taming of the Shrew is supported by lead production sponsor Darlene Marcos Shiley\, production sponors Diane Berol in memory of John Berol\, Karen and Donald Cohn\, Silvija and Brian Devine\, The Conrad Prebys Foundation\, Jean and Gary Shekhter\, and the Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Fund\, with additional artist sponsors The Lodge at Torrey Pines (for director Shana Cooper). SUMMARY:Henry IV\, Part I - The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program
DESCRIPTION:The Old Globe and USD Shiley Graduate Theatre Program\nSee full event page on Old Globe  \nBy William Shakespeare\nDirected by Jesse Perez\n \nThe actors in training at The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program bring Shakespeare’s epic tale of history\, power\, honor\, and family to thrilling life. A small company of 12 M.F.A. actors conjures an intimate experience that transports you from the tavern to the battlefield\, with laughter\, poetry\, and drama throughout. \nA joint venture of the Globe and USD\, the Shiley Graduate Theatre Program nationally recruits seven students each year to participate in an intensive two-year course of graduate study in classical theatre. Private funding for the Master of Fine Arts in Theatre program has been contributed through a generous endowment established by Donald and Darlene Shiley. Additional support for the program is provided by the Dorothy Brown Endowment Fund and the Louis Yager Cantwell Foundation. \nThe Lead Underwriter of Henry IV\, Part I is Darlene Marcos Shiley\, with additional support from Maggie Acosta and Larry Shushan. \nFinancial support is provided by The City of San Diego. \nThe Theodor and Audrey Geisel Fund provides leadership support for The Old Globe’s year-round activities.
