All who register will also receive a REPLAY. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Andrzejewski will bring together queer and feminist theory; performance studies; and archival research to address a conspicuous absence in queer readings of Shakespeare’s work: the pregnant body. \nWhile early modern scholars tend to read representations of pregnancy as commensurate with heterosexual sex\, desire\, and partnership\, Alicia focuses on one of Shakespeare’s early plays\, Titus Andronicus\, to argue that representations of pregnancy in Shakespeare’s canon still resist heteronormative structures that dictate what pregnancy should look like or how a pregnant person should act. \nTamora’s pregnant body is a “rude-growing briar\,” whispered about in the margins of the play before producing a child that directly challenges the “white-limed walls” of Rome. In short\, Shakespeare’s representations of quivering\, quickening\, and mixed-race children in Titus Andronicus continue to resist our own deep-seated ideologies about reproduction and\, consequently\, how we understand pregnancy\, gender\, conflict\, and definitions of life. \n— \nAlicia Andrzejewski is an Assistant Professor in William & Mary’s English department. She is a scholar of early modern literature and culture; queer\, feminist\, and critical race theory; and the medical humanities. Her work has appeared in Shakespeare Studies\, Shakespeare Bulletin\, and the online publication Synapsis. Her current book project\, Rude-Growing Briars: Queer Pregnancy in Shakespeare’s Plays\, argues for the transgressive force of pregnancy in his oeuvre and the expansive ways in which early modern people thought about the pregnant body. \n— \nThe public replay will be for a limited time. SUMMARY:The Shakespearean Sonnet as Dramatic Dialogue – Virtual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free Zoom lecture with Professor Paul Majkut!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nYou will be sent a Zoom link to join the talk on October 18th. \nIn this discussion\, Paul will present a short restructuring of the sonnets to give voice for two characters: the Old Shakespeare and the Dark Lady. This follows the “May and December” tradition in literature—an old man pursuing a young woman. \nFrom Paul: \n“Among its many genres\, verse poetry had long been written as dramatic monologue as well as epic narrative\, lyrical self-expression\, philosophical inquiry\, and so on. While Elizabethan and Jacobean drama employed various verse structures (blank verse\, rhymed couplets\, and other verse techniques such as alliteration and assonance)\, the sonnet sequence\, so enormously popular during Shakespeare’s life\, is also ideally suited to restructuring as dramatic dialogue.” \n  \nThank you to the City of Coronado Public Library for hosting this event! \n  \nPaul Majkut has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Shakespeare\, Elizabethan-Jacobean drama\, and the poetry of the English renaissance and 17th century in his career as a university teacher. He has been awarded two National Endowment for the Humanities grants (Cambridge\, 2003\, Oxford\, 2010)\, and has served as a Fulbright Scholar (Argentina) and Fulbright Senior Specialist (Finland\, Germany\, Mexico). In March\, he has again been awarded a Fulbright Senior Specialist grant to advise and lecture at the University of Tallinn\, Estonia. For over a decade\, he was the drama and film critic for The San Diego Review\, winning numerous press awards\, including reviews of Old Globe productions of Romeo and Juliet\, Othello\, and As You Like It\, as well as films (Richard III\, Twelfth Night\, A Midsummer Night’s Dream).
