When Shakespeare began writing for the stage\, he had already mastered over two hundred rhetorical figures inherited from the long tradition of the language arts–grammar\, logic\, and rhetoric–stretching from Aristotle to his own time. She earned her AB at Columbia University\, where she was a protégé of Edward Said. As a Marshall Scholar she pursued an MA at the University of Sussex; she then earned her PhD from Harvard University. Professor Thompson is currently Regents Professor of English at Arizona State University\, where she directs the renowned Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and the international RaceB4Race Symposium series. The author\, co-author\, and editor of ten books on Shakespeare\, race\, and performance — including Blackface (Oxford\, 2021) and Othello (Arden\, 3rd Series\, 2019) — she also serves on the Boards of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Folger Shakespeare Library and is recent past-President of the Shakespeare Association of America.\nA reception follows the lecture. DESCRIPTION:RSVP on Eventbrite: https://bit.ly/3DFts7L \nShakespeare’s play\, Love’s Labour’s Lost has perplexed scholars and theatergoers for more than 400 years because of its linguistic complexity\, obscure topical allusions\, and non-comedic ending. Traditionally it has been seen as Shakespeare’s “French” play\, based on events and characters from the French Wars of Religion.  \nIn her book Shakespeare\, Elizabeth and Ivan: The Role of English-Russian Relations in ‘Love’s Labours Lost’\, Dr. Rima Greenhill outlines an interpretation of the play which\, she believes\, is rooted in diplomatic and trade relations between Russia and Elizabethan England during the decades following England’s discovery of a northern trade route to Muscovy in 1553. She draws on original research of 16th century sources in English\, Latin\, French and Italian\, and surveys Russian sources previously unavailable in translation. \nDr. Greenhill will provide the context for the Russian-English exchange\, describe some of the Russian elements in the play\, talk about the significance of its secondary characters\, and explain its most enigmatic elements and linguistic anomalies\, as well as its two plays-within-the play: the Masque of the Muscovites and the Pageant of the Nine Worthies. \nDr. Greenhill is a Senior Lecturer in Russian language in the department of Slavic languages and literatures at Stanford University. Prior to that she taught at the School of Slavonic and East European Languages\, London University where she also received her PhD in Russian language and literature.

Is their aim to make discoveries about the past or the present? What forms of knowledge can be gained by using them? The fact that replica theatres\, of which the Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot\, Lancashire\, which opened last July\, is the newest member\, are still generating such basic questions shows that many aspects of these theatres are still not understood. Perhaps the most contested of concepts in relation to replica playhouses is original practices (OP)\, which has been variously termed historical essentialism\, creeping empiricism or just plain impossibility. However\, if OP\, that is\, exploring the original conditions of production of the plays is not relevant\, why build yet another replica theatre? \nApropos the new Shakespeare North Playhouse\, I look again at the reconstructors’ aims regarding what the Globe project was for. Using Andrew Gurr’s concept of the “two-tiered experiment” I show that space\, and so necessarily the present\, was always the primary frame of reference regarding replica theatres and their use in terms of original practices. I adapt Kiernan Ryan’s notion of the “lever of form” to show that the main function of replica theatres\, as envisaged and intuited by reconstructors\, is to shape actor-audience interaction in the context of OP (of which the shape of the Space is the key component) to see how it can generate new and surprising meaning in the real time of performance. Building on Ryan’s interest turning progressively towards the processes of performance\, I propose that thinking of OP as “the lever of form” can provide the missing element of our ways of thinking about\, and using\, replica theatres that is necessary for achieving what Sam Wanamaker\, actor and founder of the Globe\, called their “frightening novelty”. \n \nDr.Ildiko Solti is an actor-director\, researcher and lecturer\, former Shakespeare Research Fellow at Kingston University\, London. She trained in Dramatic Arts at Macalester College\, St Paul\, MN\, USA. Having returned to Hungary\, she obtained her MA in Shakespeare Studies at Eotvos Lorand University and was Artistic Director of an English language theatre company\, The Phoenix\, in Budapest. In 1999 she moved to London where she has been teaching and conducting research and experiment in performance\, focusing on Elizabethan/Jacobean working theatre reconstructions through the method of research through practice in performance (PaR). She holds a PhD in Performing Arts from Middlesex University\, London. Ildiko is currently working on a book on the catalytic role of the Globe Theatre project in performance theory\, acting and Shakespeare Studies.

References to the plays and sonnets appear in soldiers’ letters home\, in politicians’ speeches\, and in newspaper cartoons. \nPerhaps the most dramatic illustration of this state of affairs is the fascination that Abraham Lincoln had for the Bard\, often giving impromptu recitals from memory. But the tragic side of the coin was that he was killed by a noted Shakespearean actor. \nThis in-person event is a collaboration with the San Diego Civil War Round Table. \nGordon Gidlund\, Society Secretary and author of the Mock Trials. A tax attorney\, Gordon is concerned with the intersection of Shakespeare and the law. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer teaching English in the Republic of Korea. Appropriately to this event\, he has had a long association with the local Civil War Round Table. This book presents previously unpublished evidence to prove that Rowse’s identification was correct. Emilia\, an early feminist poet and musician\, was the daughter of the youngest of six Venetian brothers\, all professional musicians\, brought to London by HenryVIII in 1540 to ensure a musical wedding for Anne of Cleves. \nLearn more about the book here. \nPeter Bassano\, the author and a descendent of Emilia’s uncle\, Anthony\, suggests that Shakespeare was the father of Emilia’s son\, Henry. Shortly after the child’s birth in May 1593 Shakespeare took a trip to Northern Italy with three of Emilia’s musician cousins travelling through towns well known to Shakespeare lovers as the setting of his early plays. The book does not agree with the views of John Hudson and Peter Matthews that Emilia wrote the Shakespeare canon. He believes that Shakespeare was Shakespeare but that Emilia was hugely influential on Shakespeare’s writing\, particularly in his outspoken heroines. \n\n\n\nPeter Bassano\nPeter is descended from a family of Venetian musicians brought to England by Henry Vlll. He studied trombone and singing at the Royal College of Music\, where until 2004 he was Professor of Trombone and Sackbut and Head of Brass. He has studied conducting with Sir John Eliot Gardiner\, Nikolaus Harnoncourt\, Elgar Howarth\, Sir Charles Mackerras\, Sir Roger Norrington\, Jorma Panula and Bramwell Tovey. Bassano has been Music Director of the Oxford University Sinfonietta\, The Virtuosi of the Mannheim Court\, The City of Rochester Symphony Orchestra\, the professional choir\, The Gentlemen of the Chappell\, The Equale Baroque Players\, Wendover Choral Society\, City of Cambridge Brass Band and Oxford Touring Opera. He is the author of two books\, Shakespeare and Emilia (2020) and Before the Music Stopped (2021).

All who register will also receive a REPLAY. \nThe Shakespeare Prison Project (SPP) of Wisconsin\, founded in 2004\, facilitates the study\, rehearsal\, and performance of Shakespeare plays by incarcerated men inside Racine Correctional Institution\, a medium security prison. The project\, which has been celebrated by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections\, and in The New York Times\, focuses on the development of communication skills\, empathy\, self-awareness\, self-expression\, and the moral imagination. \nFounder and Director Jonathan Shailor will share a brief history of the project\, with evidence of its effectiveness\, and stories that highlight pivotal moments in the journeys of the participants. \n— \nThe public replay will be for a limited time. SD Shakespeare Society members will have unlimited access to this talk in their account. Join today! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJonathan Shailor is Professor of Communication and Director of the Certificate Program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside\, where he has taught for 26 years. He has been a volunteer educator at Racine Correctional Institution (RCI) since 1994. In classrooms\, online\, and in the community\, Jonathan facilitates learning communities through “The Theatre of Empowerment\,” a process of personal and social development that involves critical reading\, creative writing\, dialogue\, storytelling\, and performance. His work has been recognized with both The Stella Gray Teaching Excellence Award and The Community-Engaged Learning and Research Award (UW-Parkside)\, and The Sister Joel Read Civic Engagement Practitioners Award (Wisconsin Campus Compact). Jonathan’s published research includes multiple articles\, book chapters\, and two books: Empowerment in Dispute Mediation: A Critical Analysis of Communication (1993)\, and Performing New Lives: Prison Theatre (2010). He is currently writing a book about The Shakespeare Prison Project.

Shakespeare exited the earthly stage more than 400 years ago\, but Dr. Lederer will demonstrate that the Bard is alive and well and living robustly in San Diego. This event is presented in partnership with the San Diego Shakespeare Society. \nThe recording of this event will be available for on demand viewing on the Library’s Facebook and YouTube pages following the events conclusion. \n\n\n\nRichard Lederer is the author of more than 50 books about language\, history\, and humor\, including his best-selling Anguished English series and his current books\, A Treasury of Halloween Humor and A Treasury of Christmas Humor. Dr. Lederer’s syndicated column\, “Lederer on Language\,” appears in newspapers and magazines throughout the United States\, including the San Diego Union-Tribune\, and he is a founding co-host of “A Way With Words” on KPBS Public Radio.

DESCRIPTION:Work on monologues with Dr. Rap\, professional dramaturg and host of the podcast “Appreciating Shakespeare”\n\n$20 for actors and $10 for audience \n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nGideon Rappaport is San Diego’s premiere Shakespearean dramaturge. He will work with actors on their Shakespearean sonnet or monologue concentrating on correct pronunciations\, interpretation\, speaking in iambic pentameter\, proper syllable stress\, and making your Shakespeare performance understandable\, accessible\, and dramatically exciting to an audience! \nExcellent preparation for presenting your Shakespeare piece at any audition. \n  \n15 Students will be guaranteed 10 minutes of Gideon’s attention and feedback. Your monologue should be no longer than 2 minutes. \nWhile we can only work with a small group of actors\, we are also happy to offer up AUDIENCE seating—hear the same lessons and see the results for yourself! \nYour Instructor\nGideon Rappaport has an honors B.A. in English Literature and Art History from Cowell College\, University of California at Santa Cruz\, and an M.A and Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Brandeis University. He has taught Shakespeare\, British Literature\, and Humanities at Hamilton College\, SUNY Cortland\, Concordia University\, and the University of New Hampshire\, as well as at The Bishop’s School and La Jolla Country Day School. \nHe has also served as theatrical dramaturge for professional theatres including the Old Globe Theatre\, the California Shakespeare Festival\, the British-American Youth Festival Theatre\, the San Diego Repertory Theatre\, the North Coast Repertory Theatre\, the Intrepid Theatre\, and the Poor Players\, and on school productions for The Bishop’s School and La Jolla Country Day School. \n\n\nCheck out Dr. Rap’s podcast!\nFind it wherever you listen to podcasts or stream it here.
