“We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.”
The Tempest is a play about magic, betrayal, love and forgiveness. It is set on an island somewhere near Italy where Prospero, the one-time Duke of Milan, and his beautiful daughter, Miranda, live with a sprite called Ariel and a strange wildman called Caliban. Prospero is a powerful magician who creates a storm that sets the scene for the play. In the events that follow we see a plot to murder the King of Naples, a drunken scheme to kill Prospero and a romance between Miranda and the King’s son, Ferdinand.
Connie Boyd, the Director, has taught Drama and English for 28 years at San Pasqual High School. Took students to Fullerton, Thespians, Drama Teachers Association of Southern California, and English Speaking Union Shakespeare competitions. They performed in in-classroom presentations of poetry and short scenes. Directed and acted at Patio Playhouse for 33 years.
You’re invited! All ages welcome. Free. We recast after every scene so all who want to get a chance to read. All casting is non-gender specific so women can read men’s roles and vice-versa. If you’d like to just listen that’s OK too. Please bring a copy of the play if possible. We MAY have a couple of extra copies. The benefit to you when you read Shakespeare out loud is that you sharpen your cold reading skills whether you’re an actor or someone who just enjoys speaking and hearing the wonderful poetry and graceful language. It doesn’t hurt your street cred either.
You will meet others who share your interest in Shakespeare and theater. We look forward to seeing you here!
